A Brief History of the First Thanksgiving and How it’s Evolved from There

A Brief History of the First Thanksgiving and How it’s Evolved from There

In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying one hundred two passengers including an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted sixty-six days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.

Fall 2020 Super Plants are LA Natives

Fall 2020 Super Plants are LA Natives

2020 marks the 10th anniversary of the Louisiana Super Plants program. This year we celebrate by adding two true native woody plants: American beautyberry and our state tree, bald cypress.

American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a deciduous, native shrub of North America and can be found growing naturally in the Southeast along the edges of forests, in low rich bottomlands, at the edges of swamps, in piney woods and in coastal woodlands. Growing 4 to 8 feet tall by 4 to 6 feet wide, it is an open, airy and loose spreading shrub bearing elliptic-shaped, light green to yellow leaves with toothed margins.

Grand Cane Business Sponsors Blood Drive for Premature Infant Piper Pate

Grand Cane Business Sponsors Blood Drive for Premature Infant Piper Pate

During the weekend of the Village of Grand Cane’s Village Market on September 19, a blood drive is being sponsored between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. by Donna Tingle, owner of Gloria’s Sweet and Sassy Boutique and Merle Norman. The business is located at 8352 Hwy 171 in the downtown village area.

Between a hurricane and a global pandemic not to mention a steep increase in unemployment blood donations have taken a hit. The blood supply has become so low that LifeShare Blood Center sent out an emergency appeal for donors for the first time in over a year. The first appeal wasn’t enough, so during the same week, they sent a second emergency appeal.

Piper Pate’s parents are more concerned with the transfusion needs of their infant that was born premature at just 27 weeks…a full 3 months early. Since the little ones birth on May 20, 2020 Piper has undergone 9 transfusions.
