The wreaths are hung and candles are in place. Grand Cane Baptist Church is celebrating advent each Sunday during the month of December. This is a season of preparation, renewal and expectation as the birth of Jesus is remembered and the Lord’s second coming is anticipated when He will rein in power and justice on the earth. Each Sunday during the month the newest Church members read scripture and light an advent candle. These lighted candles represent the wise Bridesmaids who carry their lighted candles in expectation of the coming of the Lord.

Grand Cane Baptist Church was founded in 1885 with 11 members, soon after founding of the Village. Dr. Franklin Courtney, a native of Virginia, was the first Pastor and came to Grand Cane after pastoring a Church in El Dorado, Arkansas. He was a practicing physician as well as a minister. He lived out his life in Grand Cane and is buried in the Grand Cane cemetery.

Louisiana Youth To Celebrate National 4-H Week October 1-7

Every year, millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni celebrate the first week of October as National 4-H Week. The week recognizes the many positive youth development opportunities 4-H offers.

The focus for this year’s campaign is to rally support for Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program and identify solutions to eliminate the opportunity gap that affects 55 million kids across America.

“With so many children struggling to reach their full potential, 4-H believes that young people, in partnership with adults, can play a key role in creating a more promising and equitable future for youth, families and communities across the country,” said Toby Lepley, LSU AgCenter associate vice president and 4-H program leader. “In 4-H, we believe every child should have an equal opportunity to succeed and have the skills they need to make a difference in the world.”
