DeSoto E911 Receives Kudos at Natchitoches Meeting Regarding Special Needs Awareness During Emergencies

DeSoto E911 Receives Kudos at Natchitoches Meeting Regarding Special Needs Awareness During Emergencies

First responders are called to a wide spectrum of unknowns. Sometimes they respond to a home occupied by a resident with special needs or the elderly who require unconventional assistance.

The 911 Commission heard from Lela Harvey, representing Voices for Autism, at their regular meeting Tuesday, Jan. 19. She was addressing the commission for the second time requesting ways for first responders to be aware when they are dealing with special circumstances.

Harvey stated that the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office allows residents to register via a special needs awareness link on their mobile app. She cited an incident where emergency personnel responded to the home of an adult, non-verbal autistic person with aggressive tendencies. Responders knew to turn off their lights and sirens, which were stressors. “They knew the situation and were prepared,” Harvey said. “I’m pushing it so hard because I know it works. It saves lives.”

DPPJ Chooses President and VP for 2021; Juror Reads Letter Opposing New DA

The regular board meeting of the DeSoto Parish Police Jury was held on Tuesday, January 12, which was a day later than it’s usually scheduled, due to the snow and ice that fell across the parish on Sunday night and Monday morning.

Thomas Jones, Juror for District 4D, read aloud the following letter during the Guest and Public Comments portion of the meeting. District Attorney Charles Adams was sitting in the designated place that the attorney sits in within the board’s horseshoe. The letter is being printed in The Enterprise unedited:

Dear Jurors,

Charles Adam’s cannot represent the jury because jurors filed complaints against him and he presided over a matter against the entire jury.
