The transition to clean renewable energy for Louisiana took another step forward this week with the start-up of the second of three planned SWEPCO wind farms in Oklahoma. The 287- megawatt Maverick wind farm is now providing more clean energy for SWEPCO’s Louisiana customers. The Maverick wind farm is the second of three wind-power facilities that make up the 1,485-MW North Central Energy Facilities project in Oklahoma.

The North Central project also includes the 199-MW Sundance wind farm, which began commercial operation in April 2021, and the 999- MW Traverse wind farm that is scheduled to begin commercial operation in early 2022.

The DeSoto Republican Party will host a luncheon on Thursday, September 16 at 12:00 p.m. at theRB4 Event Center to hear from Republican Senator Barry Milligan and Representative Larry Bagley. The legislators will be discussing what happened at the 2021 Legislative session, and the upcoming Constitutional Amendments that will be on the ballot in the fall. The doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for seating.

Those attending have an option to reserve a lunch, but you do not have to eat to attend. Organizers will only order the amount of plates by the number of RSVPs that they receive. The cost of the lunch will be $15.00 and is payable at the door. On the Geaux Catering will be providing a barbeque luncheon with all the trimmings. Remember, you do not have to eat to attend. Sheriff Jayson Richardson and staff would like to welcome our newest Patrol Deputy, Henry Ukpabi to the DPSO Family. Deputy Ukpabi completed his training at the Shreveport Regional Training Academy and will began protecting and serving the citizens of DeSoto Parish on Monday, September 06. On September 11th, 2001 “9-11”, 19 suicide bombers linked with the Islamic extremist group al-Quaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two planes were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. A third plane hit the Pentagon just outside of Washington, D.0 and the fourth plane intended to crash into the Capital Building, or possibly The White House, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania when passengers were able to divert that target, but dying as heroes.

The 9-11 Attacks

On Tuesday morning of September 11, 2001, at 8:45 AM, the United States suffered a terrorist attack when an American Airlines Boeing 767 filled with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center (also known as WTC) in New York City.

These terrorist attacks became known as 9/11, which is how the American date of September 11 is written.

On Saturday, August 25, Robert “Robbo” Davidson and P. J. Jones, co-authors of “The Evil I Have Seen”, were guests of Barnes and Nobles on Youree Drive in Shreveport for a book signing event.

Store Manager Alex Hardings said of the event, “The Evil I Have Seen” has outsold our Barnes & Noble best seller. We were more than pleased at the size of the crowd and interested readers that showed up for the Davidson/Jones book signing.”

On Monday, September 27, The Mansfield Police Department began collecting disaster relief supplies for those impacted by Hurricane Ida. They started with any empty truck bed and trailer and left Friday morning fully packed and covered with tarps that will also be left for the victims of Ira. MPD Assistant Chief led the convoy from Mansfield ro deliver all of these items, plus much need fuel where there currently is none. Even if people have generators they won’t work without fuel.

Some of the donated items from citizens included diapers, baby wipes, deodorant, bug spray, toothpaste, dry shampoo, trash bags, cases of water, cases of Gatorade, tarps, cleaning supplies, sunscreen, toilet paper, flashlights, batteries, roofing nails, batteries, baby formula, baby bottles, Clorox wipes, bleach, pet food, work gloves, socks, feminine products, first aid stuff, sleeping bags, over the counter meds, and non-perishable snacks.

International Paper Foundation, through the Mansfield Mill, has donated $9,000 to the Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC)-Mansfield Campus.

Thanks to the generous support of the International Paper Foundation, students enrolled in NLTCC’s Industrial Instrumentation and Electrical Technology program will have access to state-of-the-art tools and trainers. These tools and trainers closely simulate that used in local business and industry and will provide for handson, practical learning experiences.

“We are extremely grateful to receive this generous donation from IP,” stated Mansfield Campus Director, Pam Hubier-Rivers, “International Paper is a strong business and industry partner and friend to NLTCC. Their continuous support of finances, and business and industrial expertise is greatly appreciated and vital to making our I/E program a success.”

Last week, State Representative for District 7 Larry Bagley was named Legislator of the Year for 2020 by the Louisiana Physical Therapy Association. Rep Bagley said, “I am honored to have been named Legislator of the Year by LPTA. Their members represent a vital and necessary component of our healthcare system that is often overlooked.” Rep. Gov. John Bel Edwards received word Sunday night, August 29, that Pres. Joseph R. Biden had approved his request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration due to the severe impacts of Hurricane Ida, a category 4 storm that has caused widespread damage across Louisiana. Ida made landfall early Sunday afternoon in Port Fourchon with winds of 155 miles per hour. As the slow moving storm continued to impact Louisiana, more than 800,000 people were without power statewide. Surge and damaging winds impacted areas along the coast and moving inland.
