Louisiana State Income Tax Filing Begins Monday, January 23

The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) will begin accepting 2016 state individual income tax returns on Monday, January 23, the same date that the IRS begins accepting federal returns. On that date, LDR will begin accepting returns filed electronically at www.revenue.louisiana.gov/ fileonline and through third-party commercial software, along with paper returns submitted in person and through the mail.

13th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Breakfast to be Held January 16

Committed, Active and Dedicated (CAD) Women of DeSoto Parish will host Mansfield’s 13th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday Breakfast on Monday, January 16, with doors opening at 7:30 AM. The event will once again be held at Mansfield Elementary-Middle School’s Multipurpose room, which is located at 1915 McArthur Drive. Since there are several speakers for the event, they each will have a designated time to address event patrons, and the time frame will not run any longer than in years past. Organizers are eager to present Pastors Anna Jackson, Frederick Fuller, Joe Paul, Cardell Speed and Joseph Hall, who will present uplifting and positive messages on the topics of reconciliation, mercy, compassion, freedom and justice.

U.S. Attorney's Office Collects More Than $13.5 Million In Civil, Criminal, Asset Forfeiture Actions In FY2016

United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced today that the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana collected $13,511,583.51 through civil, criminal and asset forfeiture actions in fiscal year 2016. The District collected $8,839,501.29 in criminal actions and $3,757,876.02 in civil actions. Working with various other offices and components of the Department of Justice, the Western District of Louisiana collected an additional $1,973.20. The U.S. Attorney's Office also worked with its partner agencies and divisions to collect $912,233 in asset forfeiture actions in FY2016. Forfeited assets deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund are used to restore funds to crime victims and for a variety of law enforcement purposes.

Ricardo “Buck” Brown to be Depicted a Floragraph on “Teammates in Life” Float During the Rose Parade on January 2.

On Monday, January 2, the 127th Rose Parade presented by Honda will roll down the five and one-half mile route down Colorado Boulevard, beginning at 8:00 AM Pacific Time, which means it will air locally at 10:00 AM on NBC (locally KTAL Channel 6). This particular year will be special to Logansport viewers as Ricardo “Buck’ Brown is featured on the “Donate Life” float as an organ donor. Buck became a hero in April 2011 by giving the ultimate gift of life as an organ and tissue donor after he lost his life in a trucking accident at the young age of 23. Through his gift of donation, Buck was able to save four lives through organ donation, and enhance the lives of seventy or more recipients through eye and tissue donation.

Amy Burford McCartney Makes History as First Female Judge Sworn-In in Louisiana’s 42nd Judicial District

On Tuesday, December 20, friends, relatives and officials gathered to witness Amy Burford McCartney take the Oath of Office to become the first female judge elected to serve in the 42nd Judicial District. Judge McCartney will serve the remainder of Judge Robert Burgess’ term (42nd Judicial District Court – Division A) that expires on December 30, 2020. Judge Adams will continue to be over Division B in addition to being the Chief Judge of the 42nd District Court. The ceremony and reception following the Oath of Office formalities was hosted by Judge Charles B. Adams, Judge Robert E. Burgess (Ret) and the members of the DeSoto Parish Bar Association. Opening prayer was offered by Fr. Michael W. Millard, with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mason, Conner and Aaron Brown and Faith Burford.

The Mansfield Enterprise Joins the Natchitoches Times Staff in Mourning the Loss of Long Time Employee

Part of our daily routine at the Mansfield Enterprise is to receive press releases and notices from the Louisiana State Police. It is always extremely hard when we receive one regarding someone we know, and is especially hard when we receive something on a fellow employee. This was the case last Monday afternoon, although we already were aware that one of our co-workers had been seriously injured in an automobile wreck.

The Candles of the Advent Wreath

The four candles on an Advent wreath represent the 4,000 years between Adam and Eve and the birth of Christ during which mankind waited for the arrival of Jesus. A candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday during the season of Advent to signify the entrance of Christ, the light, into the world. There are three purple candles and one rose-colored candle on an Advent wreath. The purple candles are lit over the course of the first two and fourth Sundays of Advent.
