The Legends and Traditions of Halloween

The Legends and Traditions of Halloween

Each year on October 31st, people from all over celebrate Halloween. A favorite of children and those who like to tap into their “inner child”, Halloween is a day to dress up in costume, hand out candy (usually to children), and try to frighten each other and ourselves with spooky stories.

Like many holidays that are celebrated today, Halloween did not start off being celebrated in this manner — its origins have a history that started many centuries ago. The actual word Halloween is correctly known as Hallowe’en or All Hallows’ Eve, the day before All Saints Day on November 1 and All Souls Day on November 2. “All Saints Day” is when we recognize the Saints that were canonized by the Catholic Church, or traditional saints, and “All Souls Day” is when we remember our ancestors, friends and loved ones that have passed.

Thank you all for making our Quilt a show a success. We thank Emmanuel Baptist Church for graciously renting to us the use of your fellowship hall. This building provides a Christ filled safety space for our group every week and for the Quilt Show, we are so appreciative to you. We thank Mansfield High School Coaches and the Freshmen Football Team for helping us with the heavy lifting and set up of our show. You were a big help.

We thank our husbands for helping put up the show and taking it down, and for all the times they had to scrounge around for meals and clean clothes and such when we were a bit busy in our sewing rooms!

Thank you to Sheriff Jason Richardson and Charlotte Knotuk representing the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism office for judging the quilts for ribbons.

Plant a Bit of Shade

Plant a Bit of Shade

Summer heat may have you seeking comfort from a nearby shade tree. You immediately experience as much as a 15 to 20 degree drop in temperature and enjoy the relief it provides.

Bring this shady relief home by looking for ways to include trees in your landscape. First, monitor patterns of sun and shade on and around your home throughout the day and throughout the year as the angle and position of the sun changes. Observe the impact your home, neighboring homes, sheds and existing plantings have on the sunlight reaching your landscape.

Consider providing welcome shade where needed during the hottest hours of the day and weeks of the year. Look for opportunities to plant trees where you can make a difference in your comfort and money spent cooling your home.

Recently, the Lewis family, which includes former Mansfield City Alderman Mitchell Lewis and NFL Star and Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer Albert Lewis joined their family in Mansfield for a family reunion while honoring their parents, Brad and Vera Lewis, memory. There were seventeen children born to their union.

The following was written by Mattie Lewis Vcelik telling their family’s history.

“Greetings one and all. Thank you for being here, for the pleasure of your attention, and for lending me your ears.

This will not be a traditional review of a family tree with its various member branches and connective histories. What I desire to speak with you about today deals with more of a “legacy”. The tale of two hearts and a legacy forged many years ago, and skillfully molded by the mighty Holy Ghost.
