I love this time of year when the temperature begins to drop. It is a sure sign that all those soup pots are being placed on the stove just waiting to be filled with delicious soup!

My husband, Marshall, and drove ten hours roundtrip recently to watch Calvary Baptist Academy’s varsity football team compete against Clarksville High in northwest Arkansas.

Our son, Bryce, is the freshman backup quarterback for Calvary, so we didn’t necessarily expect him to see the field; we just wanted to be there for him and the team.

Of course, any time we travel more than thirty minutes, it’s mandatory that I take ginger capsules since I suffer from severe motion sickness. Even being a front-seat passenger does not guarantee a nausea-free trip for me.

With Christmas just around the corner, we are trying to figure out what gift to give each person on our lists this year. Often, this is the hardest thing to do. But it doesn’t have to be. One of the easiest gifts to create is a gift basket. They offer more than just a single item, but still don’t have to break the bank!

Despite what “side of the fence” we are on politically, I think we could all agree that Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett strongly exhibited the traits of a true role model during the recent confirmation hearings.

Most “Historical Buffs”, and there are many of us here in DeSoto Parish, like to read material they can say “I Knew that” but at the close of this article likely you can say “I never heard of that!” That’s kind of a teaser but please don’t read the last before reading this entire article.

The holidays are rapidly approaching. Plans are being made for a delicious Thanksgiving meal, and gifts we would love to give. We smile at memories of lost loved ones, and reminisce about past traditions.

But there is one tradition that has been forgotten. It’s called ‘The Thank You Note’.

Despite a fall that has so far been riddled with political tension, hurricanes, and COVID-19, let’s not lose sight of the good stuff that the autumn season offers.

Just the other morning, I brewed my usual pot of McCafe Breakfast Blend and stepped outside. The crisp, 54-degree morning air was refreshing and reminded me of how fall is both a goodbye and a hello.

In light of everything that has been taking place in 2020, many of us have either considered making a lifestyle shift to one that is more self-sufficient. We want these changes to be lasting, but still fit within a budget. We also prefer to make as few mistakes as possible so we don’t get bogged down in frustration.

My advice is to take it slow and do diligent research. One way to do that is a new book on the market - The Beginners Guide to Backyard Homesteading. Lisa Lombardo is a fellow blogger at The Self Sufficient Homeacre (https://www.theselfsufficienthomeacre.com). Her website offers a wealth of knowledge on homesteading, but her book takes it to a whole new level.

The book begins with valid questions that require you to think about why you want to homestead. These are also important questions you need to answer in order to better understand the extent of your ability to homestead.
