Most kids (and adults) have no idea what they want to be when they grow up. When I ask any of my three boys, I typically hear from my oldest that he wants to teach, while my youngest is determined to be a wide receiver in the NFL and my middle son says he just wants to be a dad.

This Thursday, at 8:46 a.m. EST, the names of 2,977 innocent men, women, and children murdered by terrorists in the horrific attacks of Sept. 11, 2011, will be read aloud at the National  September 11 Memorial and Museum commemorating the 13th anniversary of 9/11. DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

President Teddy Roosevelt would have better luck bear hunting in Tensas Parish these days than he did when he came to the country of cane breaks just after the turn of the century. Rapp Osborn used his “bear” dogs to bay the black creatures for

“When you face a crisis, you know who your true friends are.” The significance of this quote, attributed to Earvin “Magic” Johnson, plays out quite often in our own daily lives. DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

Members of the Mansfield Lions Club had fun and made several hundred dollars at their recent “giant rummage sale” and the leftovers were given to Goodwill. It was held in the Clista A. Calhoun Center, which is spacious, and air conditioned. There was an abundance of good jewelry, which was sold by the bag full at the last moment. From our stuff, good for a more than giant personal rummage sale, we donated a boat paddle, a Coleman lantern, a  real large crescent wrench (known as a big “knuckle buster”), etc. They say that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

The byline has not changed after a hiatus of almost two years; meantime, if it had not been for bad luck we would not have had any luck at all. We, on Martha Avenue, have made it through infected feet, Mary with a broken and infected leg. She was down six months, Ol’ Diggin away four months. Every time we visited the old homestead, it waved us back. Finally. As we old cotton farming boys used to say, “it was a hard row to hoe”.

The feds sure do know how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Louisiana is on the verge of a manufacturing renaissance not seen around here in a generation. The robust economic growth we anxiously await has the potential to dramatically improve the opportunities for countless working Louisiana people.

Is a handout really the best way to give a leg up? That is the question we have asked ourselves since President Lyndon Johnson declared an “unconditional war on poverty in America” 50 years ago and jumpstarted a massive increase in government social programs
