GUEST EDITORIAL

Most kids (and adults) have no idea what they want to be when they grow up. When I ask any of my three boys, I typically hear from my oldest that he wants to teach, while my youngest is determined to be a wide receiver in the NFL and my middle son says he just wants to be a dad.

What in the World is Going On?

“It’s the end of the world as we know it.” In 1987, the alternative rock band R.E.M. released this song filled with a fast moving chorus that was difficult to follow but catchy enough to be memorable. The song was not an instant hit in the U.S., but found a loyal following upon its re-release in 1991. While obviously lead vocalist Michael Stipe and his band mates from Athens, Georgia, were wrong about the world’s demise, they were correct that sometimes the stars align in a way where you wonder if the earth is about to spin off its axis.

Opportunity Abounds for Louisiana Women in STEM

Why do people rob banks? Because that is where the money is. While this simple logic has unfortunately encouraged some to pursue a life of crime over the years, there is actually a much more simple and legal way to accomplish this objective: pursue a career in a STEM related field.

I usually tell my children this, or some variation of it, when I want them to eat a vegetable or skip a soft drink. I explain to them how healthy food can make them grow strong and how too much of the wrong foods are bad for their health. The moral of the story is that you can have great genes; exercise and stay away from all the taboo vices, but if you eat bad stuff you will be sluggish, less effective and fail to meet your potential

This Thursday, at 8:46 a.m. EST, the names of 2,977 innocent men, women, and children murdered by terrorists in the horrific attacks of Sept. 11, 2011, will be read aloud at the National  September 11 Memorial and Museum commemorating the 13th anniversary of 9/11. On this day we will never forget, more people lost their lives from a foreign attack on our homeland than any other day in our nation’s history.
