Did you know?

Much has been written about the Mansfield Female College, a Methodist College for young ladies. MFC established in 1854 by Dr. H.C. Thweat of Virginia and Rev. Doty of Caddo Parish preceded Pearce-Payne College for young men at Pleasant Hill by three years. Rev. E.D. Pitts, Methodist Minister at Pleasant Hill, saw the eminent need for a college for young men. Some of the other prominent people of the area that took leadership roles in establishing Pearce-Payne College were A.G. Jordan, Dr. F. Chapman, John S. Childress and others. The above three pledged $10,000 a year for a three-year period. It is interesting to note the merchants and plantation owners of Mansfield, a much larger town than Pleasant Hill raised $50,000 to start MFC.

The brick Kansas City Southern Railroad Depot stands empty and silent on the west side of the railroad tracks a short distance south of Polk Street. The area has not always been empty and silent though. Eight in the morning of April 8, 1864 the site was a place of great activity and excitements. The Confederate troops, facing one on the last and most important battles of the Civil War were being issued ammunition for the battle to save Shreveport, the Capitol of Louisiana and the entry into Texas.

Government's Kodak Moment

By Stephen Waguespack

Our society changes so fast, that sometimes, we don’t even recognize the scale of the evolution while it is happening all around us. Want to find out what is going on in the world? The days of rushing to your doorstep to grab that morning paper and then waiting for Walter Cronkite/Dan Rather/Tom Brokaw/Ted Koppel to update you on television at 6 pm is long gone. It was replaced by 24/7 news channels which have now evolved into 24/7 political entertainment channels while they try to fight off news delivery platforms like Facebook and Twitter..

Every four years, following the presidential election, the nation holds an inauguration to install the president. January 20 at noon outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. is the usual place for the ceremony. Of course, the highlight comes when the president elect takes the oath of Office. Every president since George Washington has taken the exact same oath. The Constitution (Article II Sec. 1) states the words that must be recited:

Keeping Louisiana Competitive

By Stephen Waguespack

Louisiana’s erratic tax system places us at a perennial disadvantage when in competition to attract business investment and development. For decades now, the Legislature has haphazardly patched our state’s tax structure with “fixes” in efforts to balance it against the better systems of our competitors, but these “fixes” have come at a cost. Now, thanks to a continually expanding global marketplace, technological advancements and a vastly unstable tax system, manufacturers in Louisiana are reevaluating their investment.

Closing Time for 2016

By Stephen Waguespack

Well, another year has come and gone. It hasn’t necessarily been the most enjoyable year for many, but it very well may go down as one of the most memorable. 2016 began with Louisiana welcoming a new Governor for the first time in eight years after a hard-fought and ugly campaign filled with excessive name calling and character assassination. The year ended with America electing a new President after a similarly unpleasant election season following eight consecutive years of the same leader. A majority of Louisianans supported the victor in each instance, though Governor Edwards and Presidentelect Trump are from staunchly different ends of the political spectrum
