Homemade Ice Cream Showdown!

Churn until you drop - Let’s Rumble! Memorial weekend I whipped up a bucket of homemade ice cream from a recipe I’d seen on the Internet. It sounded so good that I made the mistake of not going back to my tried and true recipe from Ms. Shirley Golsan who lived right here in Mansfield (& Grand Cane), LA. I’ve written about this great simple little recipe before and, don’t worry, I’ll be listing it again at the end of this column.

This impostor recipe that was touted as “Best Ever” bragged “No Cooking” and featured using a package of Vanilla Pudding Mix and No Eggs. So getting the trusty old ice cream bucket down and making sure I had plenty of ice and ice cream salt, I got ready to rumble, - er, I mean churn. I should have been a little more concerned about the outcome when I had trouble mixing the pudding mix in with the milk but I doubled up on the whisking and thought I had it folded in pretty good. Besides the paddle inside the bucket mixes it all up, too – right? Right?!

The second troubling sign was that the mixture kept trying to pack up on the sides where the paddles met the bucket … Uh-Oh! I had to stop the churn a couple of times to scrape them clean but the entire mix finally started to freeze and puff up and everything else then went well. I removed and scraped the paddles then packed the bucket down in the freezing water to firm up for dessert after supper.
