In the past this writer has written a brief history of several of our neighboring parishes in order that our citizens know a little more about our sister parishes. It is believed that another of our neighbors, Red River Parish, would likewise be interesting.

In the reconstruction period several attempts were made to make a new parish with a portion from DeSoto, Bienville and Natchitoches Parishes. M.H. Twitchell, owner of Starlight Plantation just north of Armstead in DeSoto was a powerful carpet bagger that tried to take over DeSoto Parish. Failing to rule here as he desired and being in the La. Senate, he set about organizing Red River Parish and was successful. Consequently for many years it was known as the “Carpet Bag Parish”. M.H. Twitchell was from Vermont on a mission to Louisiana to get everything, with the Federal Government’s backing, that he could. He was one of the more notorious reconstructionist carpetbaggers.
