The Mansfield Wolverines battled for a full 48 minutes on Friday to even their record to 3 and 3 heading into their District 1-3A slate with a 14-8 win over the Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers.

If you were a gambling man, and were in your seat at Washington-Taylor-Rogers Stadium on Friday night for the opening series, you would think that it was shaping up to be a runaway win for the Mansfield Wolverines. On the second play of the contest, Senior Jameion Scroggins scooped up a backwards pass and rumbled 32 yards for a Mansfield touchdown, Josh Ford picked up the 2 point conversion and the Wolverines were up 8-0 before the nacho cheese warmed up in the concession stand. This opener set the tone for the Mansfield defense who continued their dominance over the past few weeks as they only surrendered 108 yards of total offense over the entire night. With interceptions from Freshman Delkeldrick Thomas and reigning interception leader Roy Byrd notched his first interception of the year as well.

Although the Tigers offense was not able to really get rolling on the night, their defense put up a valiant effort to make the game worth sitting in the cold for. The term ‘Bend but Don’t Break” comes to mind where the Mansfield offense spent the majority of the game in favorable field position but were only able to score one touchdown from scrimmage on the night. The Wolverines piled up 264 of their 325 yards of total offense on the ground as returning QB turned offensive weapon Dyllan Robinson had his first 100 yard performance of the season on 17 carries. Passing game wise was the worst output of the season as Artravious Woods completed 8 of 15 passes for only 65 yards.
