Tours were conducted on the hour from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26 at DeSoto Waterworks District 1 plant, which is located at 100 Water Plant Road (Circle Drive Rd), just off of Hwy 191.

In September 2017, the Louisiana Department of Health awarded a $2.31 million loan to DeSoto Parish Waterworks District 1. The loan was made through the State’s Drinking Water Revolving Loan Fund, and improvements that were made to Waterworks I’s system were directly funded by this loan to help the district improve its drinking water system. In addition to the loan, the DeSoto water system also received a grant from the Drinking Water Capitalization Grant that pays for the first $462,000 of the loan (principal forgiveness). Neilson said that the balance of the loan would have to be paid back throughout a given time frame.

When the loan closed in August 2017, the funds were used to construct a Magnetic Ion Resin Exchange Pre-Treatment System (MIEX). This technology is used to reduce natural organic matter and dissolve organic carbon in drinking water. This also aided the system by reducing its harmful disinfection byproducts. All of these improvements were completed in November 2018, and DeSoto Waterworks 1 began using the MIEX System.
