Hey, Let’s Talk! Ole Dan Jenkins – His Ownself

We lost a very good and very funny sports writer and novelist last weekend when Dan Jenkins died at 89 (or 90 – he would have loved that ambiguity!) in his “favorite” hometown of Fort Worth, Tx. He kinda invented the one-liner back-handed sports reporting we know now.

I was first turned onto Dan while perusing through some magazines and books while visiting my friends Butch and Charmaine Golsan back when they lived in Rosedale, La. It was a book of Dan’s quotes titled “Bubba Talks” and was so real and down to earth and very funny that I had to read some more of his stuff. The movie “Semi-Tough” was out then starring Burt Reynolds so that was my first read and I was delighted that the book was so much funnier and better than the movie. The protagonist, Billy Clyde Puckett, is the star halfback of a pro football team (the Giants?) heading out to play “those Dog-A## Jets” in the Super Bowl. Billy Clyde likes women and partying and gambling and drinking a “Young Scotch”…. Butch and I still to this day talk about downing a “Young Scotch” and still call that other New York team “Dog-A## Jets”.
