David Gary Canfield, born in Moss Point Mississippi on March 1, 1942, died peacefully at his home in Mansfield LA on October 16, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gary was a graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a resident of DeSoto Parish for 38 years, moving his family to Mansfield when International Paper Company established its presence there. He retired from the company in 1997 as Maintenance Superintendent, after working at plants in Moss Point, MS, Texarkana, TX, and Georgetown SC. A quiet man who loved God and his family, he was respected by all who knew him. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Mansfield, where he served faithfully in the audiovisual area for a number of years. He loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Gary and his wife Carole helped establish The BackAlley Community Theatre in Grand Cane, LA , where he built sets, worked as technical director , oversaw the building maintenance, and lent his talents, in ways too many to count, to its numerous productions over 17 years. Because of these contributions, his quiet manner, his sweet friendship, and his love of God, Gary left his indelible mark on this community. DeSoto Parish is a better place for his having lived here. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years Carole, his son Stephen and wife April, grandchildren Connor Grayson and Ella Marie Canfield, many nieces and nephews, and numbers of friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents Carl Edward and Nola Davis Canfield, and son Jonathan Edward Canfield. A memorial service was held at Roseneath Funeral Home on October 21, 2018. Contributions in his memory may be made to BackAlley Community Theater in Grand Cane. LA.
