BackAlley Theatre Announces Cast for New Comedy

BackAlley Community Theatre in Grand Cane has announced the cast for its upcoming winter comedy THE KITCHEN WITCHES which will run February 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and March 1, 2014 at the theater.  Starring in this hilarious comedy are Shellye Abington, Linda Sibley, Lance Ray and Angel Lindsey. Director is Barry Larson

On December 18, 2013, the Mansfield Garden Club met at the home of Jackie Albright on Kings Highway for its Christmas Luncheon. Over 25 members brought covered dishes for the potluck and gifts to exchange. Each member also received a Christmas tree ornament from the hostesses, which include Jackie Albright, Gail Gage, Lula Granger, Martha Walker and Carolyn Cobb.

DeSoto Art Council Has “Red Letter” Day

It’s that time again! The DeSoto Arts Council (DAC) Board members are busy addressing the Red Envelope fund raising packets for mailing to individuals and businesses  hroughout DeSoto Parish. This annual fund raising campaign enables the Council to fund day-to-day operations, maintain the DAC Art Gallery with volunteer staff and offer art experiences to the citizens of DeSoto Parish, young and old. All donations will be listed on our Gallery our mural, our newsletter and our website those above $50 will receive one free annual membership.

The History of Folk Music and Art in Louisiana

Guests are invited to Rebel SHS on Saturday, January 11 to learn more about the history of Folk Music and Art in Louisiana. At 10 a.m. Dr. Shane Rasmussen, Director of The Louisiana Folklife Center at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, will offer a PowerPoint presentation on “Folk Music and Art in Louisiana” followed by a discussion and a question and answer period. The afternoon session at 3 p.m. will include an illustrated jam session presented by Steve Shutz of The Blanchard Jammers and other guest musicians.

Mansfield Resident Announced Winner of Contest

Nakia Graham of Mansfield was the first place winner in a statewide essay contest sponsored by the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus. Winners were announced during the Bayou Classic Scholarship Brunch in New Orleans, where Graham was awarded $3,000. Graham is a sophomore in the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University majoring in secondary education with a concentration in English.

New from the Stonewall Homemakers Club

The Stonewall Homemakers Club met on November 14 at the Stonewall Town Hall. We fixed gift bags with baked  goods and assorted personal items. The bags were carried to the Stonewall Retirement Center and distributed among the forty tenets.

Logansport Centurion Celebrates 102 Milestone in 2013

With 2013 coming to an end, it seems only proper that we recognize a DeSoto Parish resident that has exceeded living past the century mark. During the Fall of this year, Mrs. Lavada “Sis” Bryant celebrated her 102 birthday, with friends and relatives in attendance. The Senior Outreach Division of the Cowboy Church Ministries of Logansport hosted the event that was held at the Logansport Senior Apartment’s social room, with those in attendance enjoying birthday cake, punch and various appetizers.
