DeSoto Parish Sheriff ’s Office deputies have finished up a multi-day training event thanks to our local DeSoto EMS. This is the first time our deputies have had access to an open “Wound Simulator” which allows training on packing, as well as stopping bleeds on lacer ations and gunshot wounds. All in attendance were able to refresh their skills and certifications in CPR, AED, First Aid, among various other life saving procedures. Deputies from various divisions including front office staff participated in the training. This was an in-depth, hands-on approach that allowed deputies to react in real time to realistic emergency situations. We cannot overstate our thanks to DeSoto EMS for inviting our staff to take part in this training, and hosting the event at their facility.

DeSoto Director of Administration

Lillie Giles was principal of Logansport High School for numerous years before she was promoted and moved to the Central Office of the DeSoto Parish School Board. She currently serves as Director of Administration. Recently, LHS surprised the beloved Ms. Giles with a dedication in their garden area in her honor with a bench inscribed, “In honor of Ms. Lillie Giles for making a difference in the lives of students for 50 years”.

Logansport welding students under the direction of Alan Bagley and Josh Dahlem built the bench that will sit in the Garden Area in the front of Logansport’s Junior and High School wings.

When The Enterprise called the Superintendent’s office to see if Ms. Giles was retiring, the reply was, “Heavens no…we could not do without her! She is just being honored.”

Those associated with the project thank everyone that kept the project top secret for several months, since it is never easy to get one over on Ms. Giles!

Eagles Soar Over Toledo Bend as We Remember Memorial Day

Eagles Soar Over Toledo Bend

The bald eagle’s role as a national symbol is linked to its 1782 landing on the Great Seal of the United States. Shortly after the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress gave Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams the job of designing an official seal for the new nation. However, the three Founding Fathers failed to come up with a design that won Congress’ approval, as did two later committees that were given the task. In mid-June 1782, the work of all three committees was handed over to Charles Thomson, the secretary of Congress. Thomson chose what he thought were the best elements of the various designs and made the eagle, which had been introduced by artistically inclined Pennsylvania lawyer William Barton in a design sub mitted by the third committee, more prominent. (Since ancient times, the eagle has been considered a sign of strength; Roman legions used the animal as their standard, or symbol.)

St. Mark Baptist Cemetery Committee Plans Family Clean Up Day

St. Mark Baptist Cemetery

St. Mark Baptist Church Cemetery Committee welcomes all families to our annual clean up day in the Holly Community. We plan this day every year to invite families to clean up our local cemetery. In years past we have picked up sticks, raked around gravesites, cut around any trees, and picked up trash. Workers should bring trash bags, gloves, shovels, rakes, clippers, weed eaters, etc.

We will be meeting on Monday, May 30 beginning at 7:00 a.m. Bring water and any snacks that you and your family will need. St. Mark Baptist minister Rev. Willie Sherrin stated, “We cannot wait to see everyone there!”
