Did You Know

By: Raymond Powell

Time has arrived for the “Farewells and Goodbyes” to be said for the three story brick jail on the northwest corner of Franklin and Adams Streets in Mansfield, La. The old jail has served DeSoto Parish and surrounding parishes well for almost one hundred years. It is no longer used or needed and the Police Jury has decided it is time for it to be torn down because its cost to repair for use would be prohibitive.

However, back in the day bids were opened to build the jail on June 7, 1916 by L.V. Cook, President of the Jury but all bids were rejected since they were too high. Lots from Jenkins and Henderson had been purchased for the new jail and bids were offered again and on Aug. 3, 1916. President Cook and the Jury accepted Corbin Bros. bid and the jail was accepted as complete on July 17, 1917. Corbin was a master courthouse jail builder having settled down in Mansfield and had built the John Blanchard house for his family’s residence.

Part 2 of 3. I expected to take a little heat from last weeks article about the judicial system and the role of a judge. We southerners have a saying, “Tell the truth and shame the devil.” I don’t lie; I don’t make-up stories; It is what it is, people. So, let's continue with part 2 of 3 The Lawyers? If the judge is like a referee then see the lawyers like “volunteer” coaches, Yes, you are paying them, but I use the word volunteer because choosing a good lawyer, Well-Umm, Huh! Close your eyes, open the phone book, point your finger that's your lawyer. No! Don’t do that! However, do consider a lawyer's training. Consider their role in the system and your legal matter. The law is like a rule. We must obey. However, the law itself will be argued by the lawyers and interpreted by the judge. Examine the two words 1. Argued and 2. Interpreted.

Did You Know

By: Raymond Powell

This is the 175th anniversary of Mansfield and DeSoto Parish and the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourist Bureau have a nice sign in front of the office on Washington St. that recognizes this Anniversary. Also, The Enterprise has published several articles. It appears to this writer it would be appropriated to reminisce about the developments of our nice little city.

Mansfield was designated as the Parish Seat in 1843 which was the same year DeSoto Parish was organized. Along with the log court house and the old jail

Did You Know

By: Raymond Powell

As Americans make plans to celebrate one of our most important National Holidays there are a few things that should be kept in mind other than Bar-B-Queing. First of all what is the Fourth of July? On July 4, 1776 delegates of the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence from England. It was the act of declaring not necessarily obtaining our independence from England. July 4, 1776 marked the formal beginning of the American Revolution and we celebrate it as our Nation’s Birthday.

A NAFTA World Cup?

By Bob Franken

I'm totally puzzled: How could the United States, Canada and Mexico have successfully convinced FIFA, the international soccer governing body, to award the 2026 World Cup competition to North America, the first time in history that the hosts will be three different countries?

But Mexico, Canada and the United States in a joint venue for a NAFTA World Cup? If President Donald Trump goes along as he has so far, the U.S. could be at war with one or both nations by 2026, or at least have built walls on both borders. Or maybe a wall of prohibitive tariffs once he blows NAFTA to smithereens. Will there be special dispensation for Mexican fans who want to watch a match in the U.S? What will prevent them from slipping off and taking up illegal residence?

With Friends Like These

THE BOB FRANKEN COLUMN

By Bob Franken

Now that President Donald Trump has totally alienated the leaders of the traditional U.S. allies before escaping from Canada, it's easy to see what he hopes to gain from that experience when he sat down with Kim Jong Un in Singapore. North Korea could give him some pointers on how the United States will exist as another pariah nation.

Get on my team or get on. Isn’t that what you want to say to partners, staff, or contractors who can't seem to get on the same page as you. They always got a better way of doing something that what you originally laid out. You have taken the time, the money, the energy, and a good portion of your life to create this business. Now everybody and their mommy got a better way of doing it than you. Though they have not invested nearly as much time, money, or energy they seem to know everything. You are tired of going round and round about the direction of the business or project. With all that said you still have to be cordial and professionally present, “Get on my team or get on.”

Roseanne, Samantha and Kim Jong Un

By Bob Franken

By now, you're probably tired of hearing about Roseanne Barr and her racist tweet. It was another case where the usual bottom-line-feeding corporate executives were forced to display a flash of conscience. Or they calculated that her show, which has made ABC millions of dollars, would now make them nothing but trouble if they didn't get rid of her in a big hurry. So, Roseanne Barr is now in the dumpster.

What's interesting is the Trumpster's reaction. Even Donald Trump seemed to heed the advice of a grown-up; either that or he was taking his meds. Whatever the reason, he didn't directly defend Roseanne or her sense of humor, even though he previously has bragged about her big success and big ratings -- mainly because she's such a rarity in show business, a Donald Trump admirer.

Wives, are you trying to get rid of your husbands? Husbands, do you want to get rid of your wives? Calm down y’all getting excited. This not that kind of article. Get your minds out the gutter. I’m the business doctor. I’m talking about get rid of them at work, on the job, in the office, at the shop, from the restaurant, or off the project.

Your spouse/significant other (SO’s) is screwing things up, blaming everyone, and getting things wrong more than a parent helping a kid with their homework. Remember when you were a kid and your parents would help with homework. You felt proud.

Homeland Security Announcement Flew Under the Radar

By Joe Guzzardi

Federal agencies that deal with immigration love to deliver bad news late on Friday afternoon. Better yet to obscure the disappointing announcement is when the Friday falls on a three-day national holiday weekend. So, on this year's Memorial Day getaway Friday Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, hoping that the fewest possible people would be paying attention, announced that DHS was, once again, caving into big business interests. DHS will issue an additional 15,000 H-2B visas during fiscal year 2018; the new round of visas is on top of the existing 66,000 allocation.
