Huey P. Evans, Sr., age 84, passed away in Shreveport surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Visitation and the viewing were held on Friday, October 22, at Jenkins Funeral Home in Mansfield from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. His funeral was held on October 23 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. John M. Jones, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, officiating. The Burial followed immediately at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Huey was born on January 29, 1937 to parents William J. and Pearl Evans in the Sugar Hill Community, just outside of Mansfield. He spent his entire life not far from where he was born. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Will Evans and Henry James Evans. He and his wife, Betty Jean Patterson Evans, would have celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary on November 24, 2021.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years Betty Jean Patterson Evans; his children Oscar Evans, Sr. (Cathy), Shirley Johnson (Thomas), Johnnie Mae Evans, Michael Evans, James Evans, Sr. (Sharon), Janice Evans, Brenda Evans, Patricia Evans Montgomery, Huey P. Evans, Jr. (Nikki), and Kevin Evans (Ebony); his brother, Robert Evans, Sr.; two sisters, Emma Palmer and Eliza Buckley; brother-in-law Glenn McGee; two sisters-in-law, Alice B. Evans and Carol Ann Patterson; 19 grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Huey was retired from the DeSoto Parish School Board serving in several capacities at the Media Center and as a school bus driver. He served 4 terms on the DeSoto Parish Police Jury and was very active as a community activist, in addition to many philanthropy projects, to help make DeSoto Parish the best that it could be. He was a life-long member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, helping with various duties including serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board for many years. He remained a Deacon of the church until his death.

Huey’s grandsons, Milton Evans, Michael Smith, Sr., Johnathan Smith, Antonio Evans, Sr., Jerry Whitaker, Jr., Michael Evans, Jr., John Jones, Laquinton Evans, Oscar Evans, Jr., Tyrik Evans, James Evans, Jr., Thomas Jones, Jr., Joshua Jefferson, and Chris King honored their grandfather as Pall Bearers. His sons, brothers and brother-in-law paid their final respects as Honorary Pall Bearers.
