Every Second Counts

by Stephen Waguespack

Sometimes little things can make a big difference. In the sports world we see it all the time. Three weeks ago, Alabama was driving for the winning field goal to beat Auburn and propel them on the path to a third consecutive national championship. As the game neared its end, Alabama coach Nick Saban challenged the officials to put one second back on the clock so his team could kick the game-winning field goal. One second. Officials added the second back, the kicker missed, and Auburn returned the ball for a once in a generation score that propelled them to a surprising national title game appearance.

Think BIG by Shopping Small

By Stephen Waguespack.

Thanksgiving usually brings out the best in us. Sure, football on TV and food comas on the couch are huge traditions, but for most families, the focus is on gathering around the table with our friends and relatives to pray, give thanks, and reminisce about another year gone by. It is also a time when our hometown individuals and business citizens give back to our local communities in countless ways, and remind us why we have so many reasons to be thankful. Thanksgiving always spurs generous outreach by the citizens of this state that serves as a reminder of why the caliber of our people remains, to this day, our state’s greatest asset.

The Gracious Host

By Stephen Waguespack.

Service Commissioner You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. That thorough bred we call Louisiana has traveled far, through rocky terrain at times, to get to where it stands today. It galloped through tough policy fights and government down sizing, and slogged through a national recession. Along the way, it hauledon its back a federal government that weighed it down with unnecessary mandates and burden some restrictions. Having navigated that harrowing trail, ourhorse now finds itself standing on the shores of a great river of opportunity and flowing before its very eyes are limitless instances of jobs, investments and economic growth for our people.

Clouds on the Horizon

By Stephen Waguespack.
Irony can be pretty rich sometimes … and a handful of trial lawyers are taking that logic all the way to the bank. When the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East filed suit against 97 oil companies in July, they put a mile wide crack in the dam that was holding back a lawsuit tidal wave. The flood of additional lawsuits we are likely to see as a result of that action will attempt to swamp the job creators in this state and send them running for any dry land they can find. As other suits are filed to get in on the action anyway possible, the skies will get cloudier and cloudier for anyone who is planning to invest dollars and resources in the state, unless the dam is repaired.

Bon Appetit

by Stephen Waguespack

You are what you eat. I usually tell my children this, or some variation of it, when I want them to eat a vegetable or skip a soft drink. I explain to them how healthy food can make them grow strong and how too much of the wrong foods are bad for their  health. The moral of the story is that you can have great genes; exercise and stay away from all the taboo vices, but if you eat bad stuff you will be sluggish, less effective and fail to meet your potential. Our state’s economy is no different and it is starving to death right now for a healthy workforce to feed Louisiana’s growth.
