Working on the Water

If the old saying is true that the numbers don’t lie, then the story of this year’s legislative session is quantifiably easy to tell. The 144 members of the Louisiana Legislature face a $1.6 billion governmental operating deficit this session. The governor enters his eighth and final year, which means Louisiana will have a new leader in 2016.

Working on the Water

Louisiana’s residents have always enjoyed having fun on the water in the Sportsman’s Paradise, but a new study shows that more of our people can enjoy a successful career on it also. Louisiana recently ranked No. 1 in export intensity and export growth among the 50 states, sending an estimated $59 billion in goods abroad in 2014. Much of this commerce is taking place on Louisiana’s waterways.

College and Industry Partnerships are Stronger than Ever

To meet the demands of a growing economy, Louisiana has a record number of jobs and workers. Economists estimate more than 75,000 jobs will need to be filled annually in Louisiana over the next ten years, of which 25,000 are new jobs every year. While the industrial boom dominates the headlines, growth is also occurring in new sectors such as technology and health care. In fact, even as low crude prices are resulting in declines in oil and gas employment, Louisiana continues to post job gains overall due to growth in so many areas.

Clear As Day

It was a chamber of commerceweather weekend.All throughout Louisiana, thesunshine, nice temperatures and clearskies replaced the rain that had saturatedmost of the state over the last fewweeks. It was a great weekend to getoutdoors, work in the yard, eat your firstcrawfish of the spring or play a littleball. My wife and I kept the kids outsideall weekend, soaking it in. We evenvisited downtown Baton Rouge to walkaround the riverfront and hang out onthe State Capitol grounds.

DIGGIN’ IN DESOTO

How the world has changed for our generation, not only for teens, butalso for medicine and electronics, which now govern our lives. Our teensfor us World War Veterans were rather simple and pointed to better days,hopeful for the future which was dark for so long and along came the warwhich took so many of those born and served in one branch of service.Families sent sons (and some daughters) to foreign soils to protect ourland and way of life and some did not return.

Those that stay one step ahead of the game are best able to avoid falling two steps behind the competition. Currently, the New Orleans Saints are trying to exemplify this principle, restructuring their roster and locker room chemistry to evolve in order to stay relevant in the NFL.

There are two states of Louisiana right now. One Louisiana is the private sector economy. This state is on the verge of sustainable growth not seen in generations. As I travel the state to visit with LABI’s business members, most of them are optimistic that Louisiana is growing in the right direction and that the future is bright.

The trepidation that comes with breaking a heart or hurting a friend can incentivize a person to stay in a relationship that is clearly not working. In the younger years, these moments deliver some strong life lessons as we move from adolescence to adulthood.

From the Word

“And he looked round about on them which sat about him and said, “Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother”. (Mark 3:33-35) How good it is to be included in the family of Jesus, to have Him as our brother. I think that is the reason we call the men and women in our churches “Brother or Sister” because in Christ they are our brothers and sisters.

Grinding of Teeth

Relationships can be easy to start but difficult to end. The trepidation that comes with breaking a heart or hurting a friend can incentivize a person to stay in a relationship that is clearly not working. In the younger years, these moments deliver some strong life lessons as we move from adolescence to adulthood. In the later part of our lives, the ending of a relationship can more likely come in the form of losing a family member or dear friend to sickness, a painful life lesson we all will experience at some point.
