Legislators Pass One Time $250 Stipend by Unanimous Vote for COVID-19 Front Line Workers

Legislators voted on June 29 to provide onetime payments of $250 to front-line workers during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order and to protect schools and colleges against lawsuits that could arise if students or staff-members contract the virus.

The $250 stipend passed by unanimous votes in both chambers. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Sam Jenkins, D-Shreveport, now makes its way to Gov. John Bel Edwards, who has already voiced his support.

DeSoto Parish Schools - Return to School Update 2020-21

DeSoto Parish Schools have announced that they have developed a general plan to reopen schools for the 2020-2021 school year with two options parents may select:

A 100% virtual, online learning option: The virtual classrooms will be managed by the students’ teachers from their school site. The material, content, activities, and assessments will be identical to what students experience in the physical classroom.

A hybrid learning model with a blend of part-time instruction in the school building 2 days each week and interactive virtual instruction the remaining days of the week: (Monday & Wednesday - “A” Day, Tuesday & Thursday - “B” Day, Friday - 100% Virtual for all students)*

If you noticed the top of the paper (the official term is the masthead) on last week’s edition, The Enterprise and Interstate Progress rolled over to Volume 117, Issue 1 on July 2, 2020. On July 1, The Enterprise marked its 116th anniversary to begin its 116th year of publication.

Our history began when Fenn Alvord Leaming, a native of Kentucky, came to Mansfield with his wife Lelia where he and two partners established The Enterprise in 1904. At that time he was employed by The DeSoto Progress, owned by William Pegues, who had leased the paper to Leaming for $240.00.

DeSoto Fire District 1 Chief Mark Magee reported that after much consideration and monitoring of the COVID 19 pandemic, he regretted to inform the public that DFD 1 would be canceling the 6th Annual Rickey Warren Memorial Fireworks Show on the Logansport Riverfront. The free, family-friendly event is one of the most anticipated in our area so this decision was not made lightly .

Magee said, “After Gov. Edwards’ press conference on June 22 announcing that Louisiana would not be moving on to Phase 3, ...we felt that this is in the best interest of the public. This would have been the celebration’s 6th year. ”

Sheriff Warns Citizens About Individual Impersonating Police Officer in DeSoto; Public Asked to Assist with Information

The DeSoto Parish Sheriff ’s Office Criminal Investigations Division would like to inform citizens of an ongoing investigation into impersonating a police officer, and they are seeking out any additional information from the public.

Richardson said, “Our office has recently received reports of an unmarked white Chevy Tahoe attempting to pull over citizens. This white Tahoe is said to house a spotlight on the driver’s side along with red and blue lights mounted near the visor. The suspect is said to be a white male between the ages of 35-40 years of age wearing plain clothes similar in color to our DPSO patrol uniforms”.

LA DOTD Announces Extension of Repair Work Near Pelican

Road closure for bridge maintenance work on LA 513 near Pelican began on Monday, June 1, 2020, and was scheduled for completion on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. The road closure for maintenance has now been extended through Friday, July 10, 2020.

This will consist of three consecutive closures on LA 513 between LA 483 and LA 346.

Gov. Issues Order Keeping Louisiana in Phase Two, Encourages People to Mask Up

On June 26, Gov. John Bel Edwards formally extended Phase Two of reopening in Louisiana for another 28 days, as new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations increase across the state. The new order leaves in place occupancy and other restrictions of the previous Phase Two order and adds a crowd size limit of 250 to indoor gatherings.

Since Monday, Louisiana has added 3,637 new COVID-19 cases, a steady uptick in new positives. More than 3,000 Louisianans have died from complications of COVID-19. Louisiana has also pushed to increase testing, exceeding its goal of 200,000 tests for the month of June already. Louisiana has completed 257,535 tests in the month of June.

Campbell Awards $1.2 Million in Energyefficiency Grants to Area Governments

Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell is awarding more than $1.2 million in grants to local governments and parish school systems in Northwest Louisiana to promote energy efficiency.

Energy upgrades funded by the grants include high-efficiency LED lights in buildings operated by local public agencies.

“These improvements will lower electric bills by thousands of dollars for these public institutions,” Campbell said.

The Louisiana Senate Committee on Education, chaired by Senator Cleo Fields, is holding a hearing on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. in the John J. Hainkel, Jr. Room of the Louisiana State Capitol to discuss plans for reopening Louisiana’s K-12 schools.

The hearing will feature presentations by Dr. Cade Brumley, Superintendent of Education, and Dr. Courtney Phillips, Secretary of the Department of Health. It will also include a question and answer session. All concerned individuals are encouraged to submit questions for possible consideration during the meeting.

Sheriff Announces 2020 DeSoto Recipients of LA Sheriff’s Academic Scholarship Program

Sheriff Richardson would like to announce the recipients of the annual Louisiana Sheriff ’s academic scholarship program for the 2019-2020 school year. The Sheriffs’ Scholarship is made possible by the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Honorary Membership Program (LSHMP). Louisiana Sheriffs provide scholarships to graduating high school students from each parish where the Sheriff is an affiliate of the program. Qualities such as academic achievement, leadership, and character are considered in making selections of Sheriffs’ scholarship recipients. The only limitations are that applicants be permanent residents of Louisiana, scholarships be utilized in higher education within the State, and students be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students. These scholarships are awarded in sixty-four parishes throughout the state.
