Books and Biscuits Book Club Discuss “Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker”

The February meeting of the Books and Biscuits Club met on February 3 at Nonnie’s in Grand Cane with eighteen members present. LaBetha Casey let the discussion of Jennifer Chiaverini’s historical novel, “Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker”. The author bases her novel on the life of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, a former slave who not only made history but also wrote about it in her memoir, “Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House”.

Hilarity abounds when the feisty females of Eden Falls Georgia decide to shake up their lives in HALLELUJAH GIRLS running two weekends: February 19, 20, 21 and 26, 27, 28 at BackAlley Theatre in Grand Cane. Debbie Carr, Linda Sibley, Terry Sparks, Jody Gore, Milla Reddick and Abby Springer play the girls and the love interests are played by Donny Smith and Brian McCarty. Curtain is 7:00 pm all nights and the $10 tickets can be purchased by calling 872-6373 or 461-8684.

Raymond Powell, at left, traced the history of Mansfield and DeSoto Parish during a meeting last Tuesday of the Mansfield Lionʼs Club. A well-known historian and veteran Lion leader, Powell described the long history of the established parish seat and the location of Mansfield in 1843. John Blanchard acted as 
program chairman.

Longstreet Baptist Church to Feature “His Grace” in Concert

Rev. Charles Hall and the congregation of Longstreet Baptist Church cordially invite you to join them on Sunday, February 1 as they host a Gospel concert and singing. During the regular 11:00 AM service, “His Grace” will be featured as they share God’s love through their music. A covered dish dinner will follow the performance in the church fellowship hall. Across decades, southern gospel music has been an inspiration to many devoted listeners. Whether this lively and heart-stirring music is performed by soloists, duets, trios, or quartets, people are encouraged by its joyous message of a risen Savior who freely gives grace that is sufficient for their every need. State Budget Cuts Alter Mansfield Female College Museum’s Hours

Barbara Valentine, Administrative Coordinator for the Mansfield Female College Museum, has announced a change in hours for Tuesday only. Due to state budget cuts, the museum will be open on Tuesdays from 12:30 PM until 4:30 PM, and will continue to be closed on Monday.

Melrose Plantation Arts and Crafts Festival visitors examine vendorsʼ products displayed under centuries old live oak trees in front of the plantationʼ big house during last yearʼs festival
The 41st annual Melrose Plantation Arts and Crafts Festival has been scheduled for April 18 and 19, according to Harry Thompson, chairman for the event. The festival is sponsored by the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches (APHN) and annually attracts more than 2,000 visitors during the two-day event.

Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa GammaPresent Gift Card to Toy Drive

Pam Hesser, President of the Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, andmember, Helen May, were all about the Christmas spirit recently. The local chapter bought a Wal-Mart gift card that was earmarked for the “Under the Tree” toy drive, benefitting the children of DeSoto Parish.
