JAMES CECIL JOHNSON 8/15/37 - 3/16/23

James Cecil Johnson, born August 15, 1937, in Coushatta, LA, went to be with his wife Janice in heaven on March 16, 2023.

James is probably best known for his friendly smile and ability to never meet a stranger. Many met him during his years managing the Piggly Wiggly of Mansfield or overseeing the Pines Apartments. After those ventures, James and Janette became small business owners, operating J&J Carpet Cleaners. In the 90s, he was also well-known for being the Mansfield Santa Claus. Throughout that time, the couple made many friends as they participated in square dancing across the region and were regular cheerleaders at ball games for all three grandkids.

As he neared retirement, James regularly drove cars for Mansfield Auto World and became a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

In the last years of his life, he resided in the “big city” of Shreveport with his granddaughter Erin and her family. After the passing of Janice, James’ health declined rapidly, leading to his short stay in a nursing facility before his promotion to heaven.

James leaves many behind to cherish his memory: daughter Linda Adams and husband Robert; granddaughter Erin Pyles Smith and husband Robbie, grandson Patrick Adams and wife Jordan and granddaughter Olivia Pyles Harrell. He also leaves behind 6 great grandchildren: Tristyn, Jordyn, Gavyn, Justin, Ryland and Cooper.

James is preceded in death by his wife Janette Gathright Johnson, daughter Tammy Pyles, mother Marie Jordan, father Cecil Johnson and other beloved family members and friends.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Fresenius Pierremont for their love and care of “Mr. James” every week during his dialysis treatment. The “girls” were seen as an extension of the family, and he spoke very fondly of them.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Chapel, Mansfield, Louisiana. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery, Mansfield, Louisiana. Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home.
